Peter is an Employment law specialist.

Peter deals with all areas of discrimination covering employment claims, education and the provision of services. He is an expert in relation to disability discrimination. He has experience of dealing with stress and depression claims. His recent cases have involved whistle blowing, TUPE, CoSoP, unfair dismissal and sex/age/race/disability discrimination.

He was involved in one of the earliest cases on reasonable adjustments under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (Kenny v Hampshire Constabulary (1999) ICR 27) as well as the case of Rowden v Dutton Gregory (a firm) (2002) ICR 971.
He acted for a number of local authorities in respect of multiple part time pension claims as well as equal pay claims arising out of the implementation of single status and the consequent regrading exercises. He regularly advises local authorities and fire authorities in relation to strategic as well as individual employment matters. He has advised on and appeared in multi-day hearings in relation to discrimination, whistle blowing and unfair dismissal over the last couple of years both for Respondents and Claimants. He has experience of advising local authority trading companies on TUPE and changes to terms and conditions of employment. In 2020 he successfully represented a local authority in a two-week race discrimination claim involving a senior local authority employee. He has recently undertaken remote (CVP) and hybrid hearings in the Employment Tribunal.
Peter has appeared in the Employment Appeals Tribunal in cases involving a wide range of issues including unfair dismissal, whistleblowing, transfer of undertakings, wages claims, discrimination, part-time worker regulations and breach of contract. Most recently in Patel & Metcalf v Surrey County Council UKEAT/178/16 & UKEAT/179/16.

He undertakes both Claimant and Respondent work and his clients include local authorities, fire authorities and national companies. Peter is familiar with drafting contracts of employment and policies/procedures. He advises on disciplinary and grievance investigations for local authorities. He also provides representation and advice at disciplinary hearings. He drafts and advises on settlement agreements as well as mediations (private & judicial). He advises on public sector and TUPE transfers.

He has experience of advising in relation to Equality Impact Assessments and the Public Equality Duty.

He has organised and delivered seminars on a wide range of employment law topics within and outside of Chambers to lawyers, managers and HR Professionals. His recent lectures have covered areas such as social media, TUPE Regulations, CoSoP, capability and unfair dismissal.

Peter is an IPSEA trained SEND & disability specialist representing parents and local authorities.

Peter has undertaken the Bar Council’s Public Access course and is on the register at the Bar Council as being able to take direct instructions from members of the public as well as companies. Peter provides support for companies and individuals in respect of disciplinary and grievance matters.
